The one I had had a cracked liner. From the pictures it looks like you have water into two pistons. As said pressurized fir a day and see if she’s dripping. Liners pistons and rings wouldn’t be to costly. Regrind the valves and get the crank machined if bad enough the bearings to fit the new diameter. If your not familiar with the work just buy a short block

Thanks all, I'll finish stripping down and get some pressure in the block and go from there. Liners I believe are generally available as semi finished units as far as I can see- have a machine shop local to me that will do that work as well as crank grinding etc.

Liners will be cast and look scored inside from honing. That’s wanted to stop a glazed bore. Clean the very well thou. If you can’t wipe it with a white cloth and it stays white you need to clean it some more. Put rubbing alcohol or soap on the liner to block rubber seal or it can tear or get rolled. Oil will perish it after a while.

Little bit more on the strip down yesterday, engine is out but the crank isn't in great conidtion:

Dropped the oil in the gearbox and fears confirmed- second/ reverse shifter rail moving backwards and forwards while not doing a whole lot and a few teeth off at least 2 of the gears.

I’ve done that selector rail before It was the linkage further down the gearbox, but it was between second and reverse had to split the tractor between gearbox and back axle so that rail would move far enough to get the old one out a new one in .was over 30 years ago, and was certainly caused by rough driving.

Gears needing replacement as well- will concentrate on the engine for the time being, get that back up together and then have the gear box out and delve into that.

As the engine is already out, I don't suppose you happen to recall if the back end balances when you take the gearbox off do you? It looks fairly evenly split about the axles.

It is very evenly split but slightly front heavy.if someone stands on the drawbar with backend removed it’ll flip over

Evening all, had a bit more time on the engine strip down this evening and spotted this:

5000 internals.jpg

Nice big hole just above the camshaft to the rear of the block.

I've not tested the block at all yet (not had a chance to get to it). Could any of my more learned friends here tell me if this is through to the water jacket/ gallery?

It won’t be through to a water jacket I don’t think it’s actually below the camshaft with the engine the right way up and water is top side of camshaft and the back of the block ,just shows how bad the castings were.

%000 were bored block, Major had cast liners and seals, , liners for subsequence blocks after this will be spun steel and pressed in.

Thanks and yes, you're right it is below the camshaft, I wasn't taking into account the engine being inverted.

Says a lot about the castings and would go some way to explaining why some are no bother and others are troublesome from day one if there are odd air pockets all over the place.

I've also inadvertently discovered that using the forklift as a work platform is great as you can position the thing at a perfect height for working on.

Didn't some of them leak from the water gallery rather than through the bore?
Mainly through the bore thinner cast after a few thousand hrs if unlucky very rare water jacket that could be down to frost and replace all core plugs
Mainly through the bore but some times corrode through the water jacket in to the camshaft tunnel witch can be plugged if at the right place, but sometimes through to a oil pressure gallery which then pumps oil into the cooling system.
