Project Ford 5000

Recently purchased a Ford 5000 as a bit of a project tractor. A nostalgic purchase if you will, with it being one of the first machines I drove.

Anyway, said tractor has a few issues that I'll be working through over the coming weeks/ months. It's pretty straight and tidy so not planning on a full restoration, more making it mechanically sound and enjoying using it for a few fair weather jobs.

One particular issue that it has is that it is jammed solid in 1st gear an I mean literally rock solid. Have had the lid off and tried to prise it out of gear but it's not budging at all. Range select freely and when jacked up the rear wheels turn freely etc.

Happy enough to get stuck into pulling the thing to bits but before I do, has anyone come across this before/ point me in the direction of what the issue could be?

Many thanks

There a lovely tractor on a nice day with a job that suit them with no cab on put a cab on and there horrible noisy things. ours once broke the selector between second and reverse, it could be that kind of thing I replaced it myself, but had to split the tractor between the gearbox and rear axle, but I’ve never been any deeper in one.

Thanks all for the replies- if there is interest I'll keep posting progress pictures as I work my way through it. Currently sat outside waiting for me to get my kit into the workshop and I can start the process (we've recently moved premises so a lot of upheaval).

@Kevtherev if the clutch plate is stuck to the flywheel that wouldn't stop you enagaging/ disengaging gears with the engine off would it?

@Oliveau I think you may well be right about delving a bit deeper- those boxes aren't particularly complicated so it would be an opportune time to get in amongst things and swap out bearings etc I would think.

If the clutch is stuck you wouldn’t be able to get it in gear with engine running. it may be a problem in gearbox did everything look ok when you took lid off?

Yes, cioiuldn't see anything untoward when the lid came off. Will have to delve a bit deeper and see what's happening in there.

So, 9 months on and I've finally managed to get stuck into this one. The engine is in a bit of a sorry state as the pics show. Popped the first piston out and the crank is also quite badly scored. Not wholly convinced that the block isn't porous as well being that all around the camshaft/ follower area is a nice silvery grey paste. the sump however is clean enough so it's a 50/50. Just weighing up whether to persevere with this engine or just fit a replacement engine from a 6610 or similar- granted it's not original but money wise it's looking like the cheapest option at the moment...

A short motor is circa 2-2.5K, plus the head refurbishment, engine kit, liners, machining of crank etc would come in similar....

The gearbox issue- putting a spanner on the front of the crank revealed a little bit of backward and forward motion, and this allowed the selector to literally fall out of gear. Unfortunately the speed box is jammed solid somewhere so next job is to be draining the oil and see what can be seen down in there.

Leave sump off put cylinder head back on and pressurise it to see if or were porous . keep it original If you can, if you can’t they look a lot better with a flat block.

ford dealer mechanic told me when I was doing a 5000 up to put a bigger engine oil pump in the one out of the 7000 or later 6610. 7610 it has more capacity quantity not pressure.
