Sheep Handling Mobile System

The only bits actually welded to the trailer are the uprights. All the gates and sheeted sections are held in place by the vertical rods. The welds are easy to get at so that they would be easy to cut if we wanted to bolt it down to concrete in future. I reckon you would have it all off the trailer in half an hour with a grinder. There are lots of uprights left over, so we could do a combination of both.

To get the bike on board, you could just remove one or two sections. It's all adjustable by removing the original vertical rods.

@Tomo23 how did the sheep system turn out?

Were the Ali hurdles strong enough?

What size of tube, flat etc did you use to build the hurdles?

Thought I put pictures on somewhere - maybe not. Yes thanks @exmoor dave its turned out better than i expected. Hurdles strong enough....mmm....just about, there is quite a bit of bend in them but they do bend back easy whereas from what ive seen the 'professional' ones would break a weld. I need to make some L pieces to keep them more upright which will greatly improve that problem. Also to finish them off properly they want heat treating and that really would solve the problem. I found a firm localish that can do it but have been to frightened to get a quote yet. For the little number I am running at the moment it can wait. Oh and I am still tying them together with string at the moment. The Unimog is taking up to much time. :banghead:
Ally wise I used 1" x 16swg tube and 2" x 1/8" flat and the little round is 5/16". The tube and bar being 6063T6 grade so it bends cold without breaking.

Would my scotpen hurdles have been heat treated?

Broken the hinge off one and a couple are bent and I'd say we've been carefull with them, maybe it just the nature of the job, fancy making some as my bro has the welding gear.

I was under the impression that the heat didn't strengthen the hurdles at all it just relieved the stress from the welds to help stop them cracking. ( rather than increasing tensile strength. Pratley etc gets the added strength from the profile of the tube). Shoot me down if I'm wrong

I was thinking the same, the profile of prattley ones isn't plain tube

My scotpen are a P shaped profile,I can't find any the same.
No they have a special die made for them which they probably own (which is the expensive part) so the manufacturor probably only produces that profile for them. As its not a standard profile you wont find it advertised as there will be little demand for it.

You could be right @tepapa I just found a process when looking into it that sounded like it would do the job.:scratchhead:

Precipitation Hardening
This heat treatment process is generally undertaken between 100 and 200 ºC and causes dissolved alloying elements to finely precipitate within the aluminium. This results in the alloy becoming harder and stronger. This process is time dependant, hence, the term “age hardening”.

52 going to the tup next sunday. Not quite keeping up with you but I am trying. Could do with getting to know some of the arable boys down near Uttoxeter/Ashbourne and start talking organic matter. ;) Went to the Lleyn society sale at Welshpool the other week and spent to much on shearlings. As I say being joined by Boris (the tup) next sunday and hoping the teasers done his job.
