Zero income from non farming. It would be interesting to run a poll on what % of income is derived from non farming uses vs total owned land
Thought the same as the fisherman a few years ago.The Mexican fisherman paradox
The Story of the Mexican Fisherman
photo credit: click here This is the story that started the “be more with less” movement for me. While I knew all work and no play wasn’t the way, I thought I would forever be stuck in the cycle of working to live. I thought I would always have a car payment, credit card debt and […]bemorewithless.com
Buy 1000 acres pay the interest on the loan then sell 500 acres 15 years later you will have 500 for nowt
Some came very unstuck in the late 90's with that one.Buy 1000 acres pay the interest on the loan then sell 500 acres 15 years later you will have 500 for nowt
If I've done my sums right, those "free acres" have actually cost you 15k an acre in interest over the 15 yearsBuy 10 acres then and sell 5 or 100 and sell 50
My cousin runs a civils firm , kids came in and pushed it further, he said they've doubled turnover but it's becoming such a hungry animal to feed they are now undercutting on price to keep it fed in work I'm not sure what the best option is. I didn't ask him if profits had doubled but I was thinking it.A cheap system has worked for some although I spend a lot I would still consider myself having a cheap system. Spending a lot on feed for example isn’t really an issue as long as that feed is returning a good percentage of the cost back. When it is then it looks like you haven’t spent enough. Turnover although many on here say it means nothing it is something that banks take seriously and if it isn’t there then won’t take you seriously. So if you intend to expand that’s one of the things you are going to need.
I think that would be unlikely unless the land was very expensive to start with which would make it a no go anyhowIf I've done my sums right, those "free acres" have actually cost you 15k an acre in interest over the 15 years
And that's presuming land does more than double in value.
I just based it on the 13k / acre that neighbouring land to me made, and 4% interest. Can you even get 4% fixed now?I think that would be unlikely unless the land was very expensive to start with which would make it a no go anyhow
Not now but it was a lot lower for a long time previously than that.I just based it on the 13k / acre that neighbouring land to me made, and 4% interest. Can you even get 4% fixed now?
It's no good telling me what I should have done 15 years ago!Not now but it was a lot lower for a long time previously than that.
We bought some in the 90’s £1000 an acre ish was offered 6k an acre for 400 acres of it a few months ago that’s the sort of calculations I was working off
Was that land 13k an acre 15 years ago?
Well we did it only a family farm I still couldn’t tell you if it was right or wrong the way things have gone and are goingIt's no good telling me what I should have done 15 years ago!
Been hard enough keeping up the payments on what we did buy 17 years ago.
No family farm to offset it against.

Yes well 1 to 6 in 30 gives you 1 to 3 in 15 or should do anywayI know time flies when you’re having fun, but the part of the 90’s when land was £1k/ac was 30 years ago, not 15.

The work load on stock farms these days is gotton ridiculous & even more so the lack of return .. and in comparison what can be earned off farm in a job ……Not sure it’s worth the work commitments more than anything else if I was being honest
