Northern Irish Politics Thread (or what passes for politics in NI)

I have no political contacts in NI, only some family who are 'political' in the sense that they vote and argue about it, but they don't go any further than that.

In re Leo... I thought you rather liked the video... :)

As an aside, and I asked earlier, what are the basics on political donations in the ROI?
I’m not overly aware to be honest. No foreign donations allowed, and other regulations re declaration etc.
I sometimes wonder though, when I see what some candidates spend at election time.

That is my understanding; but I can remember one of your MEPS - I don't think it was the scruffy nutter - being interviewed by British media and commenting on the cash that some TDs had to flash around. Of course foreign origin is different to a straight foreign transfer...

Another fascinating subject that requires reading up on.

Post the Haughey era, there was a clean up operation. I imagine the scruffy guy and his dearest, could be innovative in that space.
Shinners seem to have a well funded campaign. Bless ‘em…

How much did other members of the DUP know and why did they want Jeffrey as leader? There were rumours of a super injunction swirling for years
I know for fact of the existence of 'rumours' of Criminal behaviour of various types by politicians in the Conservatives, Labour, SNP and PC. It is a plain fact that these rumours exist, but whether they have even the slightest basis in fact is another matter.

So please tell us, on what basis should any of these parties, and the DUP, SF etc., expel or exclude people from membership and the holding of office?

For myself, it has to be based on definite knowledge or overwhelming probability. And that means a Criminal conviction or the evidence that requires a reference to the authorities to pursue one.

Who, reading this and knowing of a rape - be it incestuous, underage or otherwise, would not want to see the perpetrator brought to justice and so take his knowledge to the police? And who would wish his own reputation and even freedom to be dependent upon rumour?

Was there a change to the privy council recently?

In practice though, the distraction factor alone, between now and end of trial, would make Donaldson’s job impossible to carry out, and inflict even more damage on DUP as a whole.

I'm with Danllan here in that in the worst scenario the prospect of a fair case could be so badly buggered by public interference that neither justice for the alleged victims nor vindication for the alleged perpetrator are possible.
