Yes very. I was back drilling barley today and at one point I very nearly stopped as it was getting shitty on top but a couple hours wind and was lovely going again.

son of heir do you grind your beet seed beds to dust to suit drill .
Not really, just hope for the best! Normally get good yields using it. Generally go over quick with Guttler front press and power harrow, then same with 3m roll behind to firm it up. Was getting a bit cloddy on the roddens, but I think there’s enough tilth for the drill.

None on beet at all. Have occasionally put a small amount of N on the heaviest bits.

What would be a typical base fert for beet?

Under RB209 sugar beet needs: assuming 90t/ha crop tops left in field.

72kg P/ha
153kg K/ha

N depends on following crop and rainfall.

But if you can get good crops without, it certainly leaves you with a bigger bonus from growing the crop.

Thanks, I think we will need to start doing something about it. Has been several years since I used to put beet fert on,probably 10-15 years I reckon.

Apply muck and fert for spuds, one year in 5. That is all.
No wonder you can afford new tractors!!! The amount I used to spend on Omex for beet would make your eyes water. I have only farmed one bit of black from memory it didn’t need much k but a bit of P. I know you don’t need much N on black land but I’d be doing a bit plus salt at least.

New tractors will never be bought from the profit of 19ha of beet! We did do 96t/ha this year, but lost a lot of sugar in the heap I think.

Maybe if we sort the fert side better we’ll get over the 100t/ha average.

But the index’s from samples haven’t called for fert.

There you go then - if tests are all good and yields are spot on why worry 👍👍👍👍 very jealous.
You potato boys are spoilt, for us cereal growers if yields are good, beet will be our best crop this year

Too much N limits yield I thought?
Grows a lot of top and increases amino N that gives the factory hassle from an impurities point of view but unless you’re going to put it on full bore you should still get an ever diminishing yield response; provided everything else is adequate. Wouldn’t be cost effective though
