Tim also misses out the bit about the loss of BPS, which at the very least, provided a modest backstop in the event of a difficult year. Granted, it it was miniscule in comparison to the cost of growing crops like spuds, but it all helped...its become a problem as growers have cut back the areas due to downward prices and increased costs and risks. theres not the money in it to take a gamble and grow a few extra acres anymore so that keeps the job tight
the egg job was exactly the same until they put prices up to ensure supply
im not sure how many carrot growers etc would get that as most of them dont have a land baseTim also misses out the bit about the loss of BPS, which at the very least, provided a modest backstop in the event of a difficult year. I can think of four fields locally after potatoes and carrots you can still do laps of in a boat and won’t get drilled till autumn. Needs to be a good rent.Regards SFFI think his real point is Defra is competing in the land rental market. Nationwide trades in vegetable crops - much grown on medium / light soils. SFI outbids rentals. £798 for IPM2 Nearer £1k for AHL2 + IPM4 + IPM3. I wonder how much veg land has been lost or indicated might be lost to the new tenant Defra. Why rent for £300 acre with the hassle of late lifting etc when can SFI it for not disimilar. At the very least Defra provide a useful underbidder amount. Of course that loophole has been to an extent closed off.
