Sorry but does he expect limiting SFI that people will grow crops taking on all the risk or at a loss so he can get his potatoes and parsnips as it reads that way.
Food shortages are not the growers issue, if the middle man takes on some of the risk and the price paid to the grower is relative to the risk then i am sure people will grow. If not and the grower is having to take on everyhting why would you?

All they are really worried about is not making money/ having anything to sell. The weather in this country has been atrocious and the weather in the main importing countries has been bad to, so drastically reduced supply which means no/less product to make margin on and it effects their margins/probably business. But for numerous years all they have cared about is if you cannot do it for the prices we will import but it looks like catching them out and then complaining that UK farmers are not filling up the gap when imports are not available.

its become a problem as growers have cut back the areas due to downward prices and increased costs and risks. theres not the money in it to take a gamble and grow a few extra acres anymore so that keeps the job tight

the egg job was exactly the same until they put prices up to ensure supply

Tim also misses out the bit about the loss of BPS, which at the very least, provided a modest backstop in the event of a difficult year. Granted, it it was miniscule in comparison to the cost of growing crops like spuds, but it all helped...

Regards SFFI think his real point is Defra is competing in the land rental market. Nationwide trades in vegetable crops - much grown on medium / light soils. SFI outbids rentals. £798 for IPM2 Nearer £1k for AHL2 + IPM4 + IPM3. I wonder how much veg land has been lost or indicated might be lost to the new tenant Defra. Why rent for £300 acre with the hassle of late lifting etc when can SFI it for not disimilar. At the very least Defra provide a useful underbidder amount. Of course that loophole has been to an extent closed off.

I can think of four fields locally after potatoes and carrots you can still do laps of in a boat and won’t get drilled till autumn. Needs to be a good rent.
