Spring Barley

Had to dig drill out this morning, not the best season to buy a drag drill 👎 given up on that field for a week plus. Not sure I have much else I can do without a week of dry either, maybe 35 acre. Forecast looks to be sh!t for the week for us too 🤦‍♂️🙄 trouble is the surface is dry but not very far under its porridge in random places so so easy to get caught out.

Would it be better to apply urea before drilling with a combi or after to spring barley?

This is all hypothetical of course…

Without a doubt I'd always apply fertiliser to spring barley before drilling. General plan used to be 50% before drilling, 50% as soon as rows are visible.

With the weather as it is in recent years I'd be inclined to apply it all before planting to ensure it's incorporated and available for the crop when needed. No point having it sitting on the top waiting a month for rain to arrive.

There's a couple trying round this way one is straight behind the plough the other isn't it'll not be fancy .
I has a think and out of 350 acre we'd have 25 that could get the rest will have a swamp in it somewhere so better just wait a bit longer .

I've been finding that out today too.🙄

Think there will be a lot of bits of fields left to be patched in if/when it dries up.

Jebus. I can't think of anything more depressing than having to drill barley, spring barley, too, into conditions like that. I bet there is a fair lump of land that looks like that from end to end and it won't just be in the odd corner or patch.

That being said, went through the Mendips today and crops of winter wheat and barley are sort of all there by some miracle. Couple of places where heavily trafficked areas are suffering but what can you expect.

Hypothetically, if you have incorporated the urea with the combi, you have mitigated the risk of volatilisation. I'm sure a FACTS advisor would be happy to sign that off. I'm assuming it's untreated urea?

imho 500 to 600 seeds on heavier land
250 to 350 kg per ha depending on seed bed

from now 1 head per seed with little tillering will not give enough heads

and more important if there is rain in july the secondary tillers will delay harvest and spoil malting prospects
an extra 50 kg seed will yield more than an extra 50 kg of grain
a thicker denser crop that mats together when laid is easier to harvest than a standing crop that brackles over
