I’ve being living in fear all winter that this stud broke out from next door. If that got in among ewes or feeding hoggs it would quite happily tup 100 sheep per hour 🙄😂 they have a skill of being able to jump at a fence, turn sideways in mid air and fit through that gap between the netting and the Barb. It’s like the matrix

The mistake is late shearing so the sheep don't have a full fleece during the worst of winter, we've always sheared our Scotch Blackface first week in May, they are up on Dartmoor all winter long until the first dozen lambs emerge 14th of March, they then come back into the fields, they always come back in good condition & never see bagged food in their lives. Who'd want to up on the hills in Nov Dec with only a light jacket on!
Cripes 😳 we’re lowland and most of our ewes aren’t ready to shear until early/mid June

Second week in July this year, was up at lanark with a few odds& end ewes that aren't rearing a lmb for some reason but probably only had over 2000 hoggs maybe 800 ewes. So expect a great trade. Had a new buyer so that always helps.

Yes

I have also have heard the last couple of days of yet another farmer culling all their ewes this summer and stopping lambing.

Quite where the sheep meat is going to come from in future years is debatable as the recent high prices after years of low prices have come too late to keep younger family members at home working on the farm and the older generation left working the farms on their own are finding it increasingly too much work to carry on lambing sheep.

To be honest if these winters and springs are going to be the same as this one every year I’ll be doing the same

Australia or NZ , supermarkets dont give a flying * about uk farmers they only want us to get assurance and use the flag (or parts of it ) on every thing else , very short sighted , if it wasnt for the ethnic trade we would all be sunk .
