Yes you have to be careful with them the first summer then build them back up the following winter and they're usually right .Takes at least a year for a bull to become acclimatised to your farm and weaned off ad lib hard feed
record numbers going through the rings down here.No shortage of stores going through Carlisle on a Wednesday at the moment, and finished price slipping
never seen the point of buying a bull, which is soft as hell, stuffed full of conc, waddles as he walks around the ring.Oh FFS
Or buy on farm.I wonder if nowadays when they are boiled up so much folk would rather buy in Feb and get them acclimatised before turning them out into the big wide world
This is happening more and more. I used to buy in Stirling but too many problems with fertility. Prefer to buy on farm now.Or buy on farm.
You going out of milk?record numbers going through the rings down here.
but both the dairy, and beef cow numbers have dropped over the last couple of years, the point was, record numbers now, means they won't be there in the autumn.
and going forward, if the cow numbers keep dropping, it simply means less calves, which means once the present numbers, lured out by price, there will be fewer numbers going forward.
just hope l am right, just bought over 200 calves !

then spending a long time getting him fit to work, and not reliant on conc to keep going.
appreciate a lot of time, and skill goes into them, to present them looking perfect, and accept that some buy on looks. Lean and keen, is how l like them.
the bull is half the calf, and not sure we should be relying on one, that is judged, basically on the amount of conc, it has eaten, in a pampered life.
Yes hes doing well, been in with some cows for a month now. Father saw him bull one, will have to look and see when her return date is to keep an eye out. He ripped his ring out 10 days after the sale and made a bit of a mess of his nose but its all healed up now. What’s he looking like the one you bought?
I’ve just remembered about that
What difference does 2 days in the mart make? I’ve been to see bulls on farms before and they are still hard fed….just not halter trainedThis is happening more and more. I used to buy in Stirling but too many problems with fertility. Prefer to buy on farm now.
In my experience those that are selling off farm don’t tend to push them as hard. Like feeding them every four hours and stuff like that to maximise intake. What difference does 2 days in the mart make? I’ve been to see bulls on farms before and they are still hard fed….just not halter trained
try different farms thenWhat difference does 2 days in the mart make? I’ve been to see bulls on farms before and they are still hard fed….just not halter trained
Same , not been to sterling for many years, just buy off same folk now. This is happening more and more. I used to buy in Stirling but too many problems with fertility. Prefer to buy on farm now.

I’m happy with mine he’s seems to be getting us some better calves maybe he’s not going to make the biggest bull by the look of him but he seems happy enough and didn’t go back over too much.Yes hes doing well, been in with some cows for a month now.
