Back to 24m

Thinking of going back to 24m from 36m. My boom height control system on my 36m is woeful and needs a big upgrade which is huge money so I’m thinking of going back to 24m which would also allow me to go back to granular fert instead of liquid (I’ve posted a thread on that in the cropping section). I could do away with the big heavy trailed setup and get into a lightweight agri buggy type sprayer for not much more money than my decent trailed is worth.

We went from 24 to 36, and also from 3000l to 4000, 3 years ago. We have fields from 42 Ha to 3 Ha. I would say that the biggest contributor to increased output is a larger tank, not increased boom width. I would also say that our daily output actually has not increased that much, and is helped more by bowser assistance than anything else (although that requires another tractor and man)

Why not go 36m self propelled?

36m kit is too fudging dear

36m self propelled are not for the financially faint hearted . . .

Local spud grower and arable man was looking at 36m beastie as upgrade from trailed 24m.
Then he had a month in hospital in August and a slowish return back to full form.
The fact that everything was on 24m meant that almost anyone could be roped in to cover the blight spray workload.
A second hand self propelled 24m has arrived.

Another arable team have perfectly straight pairs of ruts 36m apart across all their land. It might be the 'effecient' way but it looks a mess in a year like this.

Europeans seem to be going wider but slower speeds and even back up towards 200L/ha to get the efficacy back as chem loses its bite. And better environmentally to travel slower, could spray in slightly worse conditions at 6kph compared to 10kph. Slower speeds would give the chance for the height control to work better?

6K and 200L?!
We spray (120L/Ha, +/-10) and liquid fertilise (350L@20%) everything at 16k, with a 2nd hand 24m SP.
At 6k I would have to live in the sprayer cab, sod that. Higher rates and pressure create drift, keep rates low and theres no need to mitigate drift with slow speed.
There is a lot to be said for efficacy, but the same goes for timeliness and making the most of these all too brief weather windows.

I went from 24m to 30m 2 years ago on a 4000l sp chafer. Now work on achieving 160ha in 10hr day as opposed to 120ha. 30m is a great size, find it rides as well as 24m, not a massive boom, can keep forward speeds up, works with our 6m drills and fert spreads to it easily. I look at some smaller sp's with 36m booms and it looks like the tail wags the dog, on mine everything feels balanced and the norac uc7 works well

At 16k you’re creating your own wind 😉 you’ll be surprised how much spray gets ‘sucked’ under behind the sprayer itself and messes the pattern up. Thing in CPM a few months ago and I think that only went up to 12k.

I’m not convinced higher water rates actually help 🤔 if you only have a small target surely a higher concentration of chemicals is better? I get for pre ems or fungicides higher makes sense.
