Wood pellet price

Oil is about 80-90p a litre so 8-9p / kWh.

Rhi and biomass can be good, we are getting around 8p a kWh net income from rhi. We then sell the heat for another 7-8p and don’t use maybe 3000 litre of oil to heat the farm house.

That said OFGEM are now deliberately trying to shut us all down by making the hoops harder to jump though, I think.
That's the issue with my commercial RHI customers... the hoops have got harder and trying to find someone compliant to service them is an issue. We have about 10 Grant Spira wood pellet boilers that we have sadly decided to refuse to service as ever visit results in a £500-£1000 billl due to the cost of parts. Might be good money but feels immoral and I want no part of it. We are not Hetas so can't service under RHI rules.. despite being trained on the bloody things.

If its not kiln dried its half the price again. Nobody will pay top price for water. ie woodpellet 9% MC kiln dried woodchip 12% MC woodchip 25-50%???????
Don't be just focused on the moisture content alone, the type and quality of the wood makes a huge difference too. Poor chip will not only give you a reduced output but you'll get excessive ash and clinker. Our original supplier turned out to have been chipping a lot of small branches basically shoving every bit of crap in the chipper. We just burnt the stuff and thought all the ash and clinker was normal. It was only when we changed supplier that we realised we had been buying rubbish. We can now put 12 tonnes or more through before we need to empty the ash and the grate is always clean - with the original supplier it was 2 - 3 tonnes and a grate full of clinker!

I would agree if chipping a lot of green waste of leaves and bark but small branches ie clean brash should not produce excessive ash and clinker so long as the moisture content is very low. Obviously bark and green waste will not have that low moisture content.

If not claiming RHI, should be fine.
Froling told me they expect plenty of clinker from straw pellets.
I've often wondered about how difficult it would be to make straw pellets from rape or wheat at harvest, instead of buying in wood chip.
There was an amazone starw pelleting machine at 1 time, but think it needed a very large tractor on the front and was slow.

Krone make one but you need around 350hp on the front and its very slow. Think the baler itself was about £250k but probably more now.

Just taken delivery of 17t of wood pellets priced at £597 tonne. Last time I bought it was £244 and prior to that it has been around £205 for a number of years.
We can burn wood chip with a change of settings on the boiler. I'm guessing it will be significantly cheaper and worth the extra hassle, we may have to concrete and make a storage bay within a lean to to be able to take an artic load.
Has anybody got a recent price for burnable woodchip and how much cheaper is it per kWhr?

No idea what boiler it is but cant you put straw in it? Even taking into account the opportunity cost of either selling it in the swath or chopping, its still miles cheaper than any kind of wood material. We are getting 3000-3250kwh/tonne from 10-15% moisture straw. If we couldn't use straw I think we'd turn ours off to be honest.

I'm a bit late reading this thread but we have been using wood pellets and the change in prices over the past year has been really frustrating to try and keep a track of. I've found the best and most consistently priced for En Plus A1 wood & BSL blown wood pellets have been SDL Pellets.

Delivered 27t loads are coming out at around £265 - £275 and could drop a little further this summer, a bit more for smaller loads. It's definitely the time to shop around a bit as it has been a few years since we have seen prices dropping to these levels, hopefully it continues on the downward trend. Remember the £199 days!
