Good morning, seen a ford 6610 first generation locally for sale, fancy something like it for a yard tractor/to mess about on. I've not seen it yet but from the photos looks like it's on original block, is that a worry? Cab looks a bit rotten but apart from that looks tidy. Unfortunately on column shift gears, never used them before, is it an issue? Also it's less than £5 grand just. Sound a bit cheap? Thanks

No rhyme no reason with porous blocks. The one you are looking at has reached 40 years old with no issue. But could go tomorrow. Worst case scenario........new block £2.5k. Column shift gears.......H pattern ? Folks hated the first version........but for occasional use... is it really an issue ?
Less than £5k.............yes a bit cheap unless it's rough.
Does everything else work ? Plenty of adjustment left on the clutch / brakes ? PTO STOP as well as start ? Hydraulics OK ?

At that sort of price, and age, expect problems/ issues. Don't forget, a new tractor is £100k plus.........

Have a 1982 ford 6610, owned from new, got about 2600hrs on it, the block went porus about 10 years ago, had the engine rebuilt , keeping the smooth block, to keep the tractor orginal, new clutch fitted at the same time, all fine for a few months after, but the same thing happened again? The same mechanic took it apart, had a hard job to find the problem, had to warm the block up, then found a very slight crack, hole, that he then had "fixed", this was as i said about 10 years ago, up to today its been fine, good old girl, to keep, ive also got a 1983 6610 that we bought second hand about 20 odd years ago that had had a replacement ribbed block fitted, before we bought it, that lives on the yard scraper during the winter, then gos on the bale wrapper, both been good, simple tractors to service run and keep if "looked "after

Ref porous blocks if engine bored and liners fitted should cure problem, non h pattern gearshift should have be changed under warranty.
In my experience the 'Rubik's-Cube' gearshift arrangement was re-worked to 'H-pattern' on 7610 models, but not on 6610s ....... At least that's what happened here in Norfolk .... A number of 6610 Rubik's still out there & occasionally come up for sale.

Not here, all models were done, i remember a 6610 that an owner tried to move, the air turned blue, his son was ok with it, that was before modification.
