switz is lovely with the mountain scenary but we stayed in italy on the so called forgotton lake on a road trip . Not garda just too commercialised and a rip off for food and drink nor como similar but not as bad .Lake maggiore near the swizz border was one of the most pretty areas ive been to in europe. For a few days at that time of year late june early july the area is uncrowded except at weekends with loads to do and see plus the hotels all bedecked in flowers are first class in whatever price range . Everywhere the folk are welcoming. We then crossed back through swizz on to the black forest which was dissapointing in comparison having read and heard so much about the area .Stayed in a place called stressa on the lake and have to say it got rid of the stress of farming for a few days. We like to visit different places usually for 2-3 days then move on (so much to see so little time to do ) but this is one of the few I would happily go back to even next year

My partner says the Italian part in the south is lovely, but she also said start saving now. Fly into Milan and take the train up to Lugano. She said in that area you get Italian food & culture combined with Swiss punctuality. But she couldn't emphasise who expensive it is in Switzerland (she has family there).

Switzerland is beautiful, but the dolomites are amazing too. Very similar to Switzerland and cheaper
The decent down the marmolada is fun in the winter as is a trip both ways round the sella ronda, not forgetting a tour to the hidden valley only to be towed on skis along a connecting track by a couple of horses and 20 or 30 more folk hanging on to a rope being charged a tenner for 5 minutes which must be the most profitable cash diversification of any farmer ive ever come across.

If you want something different my favorite part of europe for a holiday is Spain's north atlantic coast. Its beautiful and empty, has good beaches and lovely mountains. Its all good but The Picos de Europa mountains are stunning and you hardly ever see anyone there.

was just about to suggest the same ! did this last october and it was an amazing trip

easy / cheap to get there with your car via plymouth- santander boat

stay in the Paradors - some amazing locations and hotels that are great value as well

I did that ferry trip in 1993 with my new wife on a road trip to Andorra via the mountains. We spent our first wedding anniversary in the Parador of Olite.

Then we did it three times with kids in toe in the late 90s visiting the coast west of Santander. One trip we actually bumped in the BBC Holiday programme filming and we were the only british they could find to talk to so they followed us around for a bit and offered to buy us a meal on the ferry in the posh restaurant so they could film us there.

I can now drive there in 5 hours and we go whenever we can.. If you ask at a Parador they will give you a "passport" and you can get it stamped at each one you stay at. I would love to visit them all. I am currently at about 20 or so.

Another thing about the Paradors they have great prices out of season so suit a tight fisted farmers calendar.

I've done Switzerland twice, we normally do European road trips so did a week there, its eye wateringly expensive to eat out, like mental, but it is beautiful, plan a trip with a few days there then head over to south of France.

Did Zermatt once in the summer….by train from Geneva airport…
If mountain walking etc is your thing it’s brilliant with a good few lifts and cog railways to get you up top….
BUT!!!
It’s eye wateringly expensive …..the advice about staying on the Italian side is good advice.

Love travelling round Europe by road and train. France probably my fave, the Dordogne region in particular. Very picturesque medieval towns and villages. Campsites with great facilties. Beautiful canoe trails esp floating past La Roque Gaegac. Great place for family holidays.
