Never been keen on Swaledales as they look puny in comparison to our larger Scotch Blackface, all are bred pure & all lambs sold fat.

Is that with "warm" rain instead of cold rain ?

To be fair thats whats needed here , this place thrives in warm rain . Cold dry is useless here.

You are very low then. We could get away with shearing late may on some away ground but often wait until early/mid June that will be 850ft

a lot of our ewes are turned out with lambs in March April at 1200’ they wouldn’t thank me for hacking their fleeces off until late June

Modern Swales are small and very fine. But pound for pound they have a lot of lambs nowadays milk well and rear big lambs but they are now very hungry without the food they don’t perform imo

They sort the shearers from the clippers for sure , last few years i have had some very good you g
Ladys shearing them , ive came
Conclusion the ladys are better than the chaps !
o have done them on my own before , god they are hard work get 100 romneys in shed the lambs off clip em pack wool dose the lambs on your own …. Likes a weeks work rolled i to one day

Would you take a mule over one of your trial shedders?

Farms around 650 ft, sheep on moor around 1,400 ft, obviously we are in the South West so milder than the likes of Scotland but people tend to do what they have always done. By the time ours go back onto the moor at the end of Nov after tupping they have a full fleece & in our case winter very well on the moors whatever the weather.

If a farmer asked me to shear his ewes in May up here I would tell him to do one!!!!

They talk about cruelty to sheep but nobody ever mentions how cruel it is on the shearers shearing sheep early too !

No! If I wanted to do that then I would have already been out and bought some of the overpriced, short lived, mis-mothering pillocks, if I could find any that were Mv accredited.

Might have to try something else someday but best thing about swale is you can keep twice as many to the acre as the bigger sheep
