    Management of AB15 legume fallows

I have some which are well over knee high, and thick with grasses. Others are shorter but thick with flowering crimson clover. What are people doing about management in these scenarios? There's plenty of flowering blackgrass in some, docks in others etc. Grazing or taking a cut would...

    Grass weeds

worst I've seen here for years, reckon the rain made autumn sprays short lived and broadway star seems to have done very little this spring Rye grass and not blackgrass thankfully, but 2024 is certainly not a year where its easy to take a lot of pride in a farm Is it just me or are others...

    Summer Cover Crops

What is everyone thinking on this? I have winter triticale for AD being foraged in June, so was always planning to do a summer cover crop with legumes infront of the following wheat. There is now talk of SFI payments for this scenario which is another bonus. My initial thoughts were something...

What % of spring crops not planted or destroyed?

Planted our spring oats 22 April, replacing the acreage of intended Winter Beans for which, sadly, there was never an appropriate window. But 80mm rain here in the 10 days since, including 32mmm last night, means that this field is now, yet again, very waterlogged - crop not yet emerging and...

Too cold to sow legumes ?

Thinking of sowing my spring NUM3 this weekend. Vetch, Buckwheat Phacellia, linseed and clover. Is it still too cold ? I’m in Sussex, so pretty far south) Thinking if I leave it much later it will struggle to flower and meet the aims . Also, conditions look to be pretty good for drilling on...

Can you move PG01 into one of the arable SFI options?

I have a parcel of land that was down as PG01 permanent pasture in my 2023 BPS, it needs re sowing and I thought about putting it into AHL1 pollen and nectar mix . If I keep the land use code as PG01 it doesn’t give me the AHL1 option in the land uses section of the SFI scheme, but if I change...

Spring Sown NUM3 mixes for Blackgrass Land

What mixes are people considering for a six month NUM3 on blackgrass clay land that doesn’t result in a huge biomass problem at the end of August? Looking to drill wheat after with a tine drill - don’t have a disc option. Happy to cultivate as not planning on DD.

SFI - What % have or where you going to taking out of production?

Going off the back of the recent news from Defra and reading the current thread about it it would be interesting to see exactly how much land people where actually considering taking out of production. Winter cover crops on heavy land... what a disaster

I farm heavy silty clay with flints. No ditches, no land drains. Good strong wheat land, if unforgiving. I've been trying to grow cover crops on and off for the last 9 yrs. With one exception, they have all been disastrous. Summer cover crops in place of a spring crop, on the other hand, can...
