Been told but couldn't believe it, woodpeckers snatch baby birds from nests .
I was out feeding dogs etc and heard hammering from the gable. Sure enough, a woodpecker flew off, looks like he's found the marten nests .
Quickly refilled his usual feeders, peanuts, fat cakes etc. Hopefully he'll leave the nests alone.
It's a love+hate relationship. We put the flying bird kites up Tuesday to stop the martens gathering on the lines above the hives. Counted 60+ a few years ago just sailing out, snapping bees. The hive that gets the sun first and starts flying the earliest was decimated. Plenty enough bugs elsewhere .
