    Clarkson again

I used to farm in Suffolk and now farm in the Cotswold (though not actually any Brash). Actually many of his normal crops weren’t that bad for round here. So somebody, presumably his agronomist, is doing a pretty good job. Kaleb rents some land in his own right very close to me and he isn’t...

    Who's bottled it ?

I reckon Wheat after Oats, especially DD’d after the oats is a problem. It’s as if the rotting Oat stubbles exude some sort of enzyme or hormone that the Wheat doesn’t like. Especially in a wet Autumn.

    Who's bottled it ?

Are you far enough north not to have BG as a problem? Assuming that you are, I imagine Min-Till is ideal in your situation. Any form of DD drilling in the Spring is generally far more difficult to achieve good results.

    Who's bottled it ?

Unfortunately, both Ploughed and Min-tilled land close to me has miles better BG control than I do! Generally though, the Ploughed is better re BG control. I have never seen BG so bad on this farm despite the biggest spend on Pre-ems I have ever made! What it has proved here, is that we must...

    Who's bottled it ?

Do you mean you have Min-Tilled over the last 3 years or Direct-Drilled. Obviously they are very diferent. One type of establishment I am very unlikely to return to is Min-Till. It absolutely wrecked this farm with regard Blackgrass, because it just mixed it through the entire soil profile...

    Who's bottled it ?

That is good to hear @Clive , but I wish I could be more confident on some of the soil-types we have here. Yes, the fields are much more travel-able on that had we have conventionally planted them. We used a Penetration monitor on them last week to see if they were too hard and very...

    Who's bottled it ?

No it’s not. It is just common sense being applied to the scenario. The ‘quite a u turn’ may come later if and when I’m forced to give up DD because it won’t work well enough here! Which I hope won’t happen, but I’m not daft enough to keep banging my head against a brick wall if we have more...

    Who's bottled it ?

I think we may be in danger of splitting hairs here Adam. There is a lot more to it than meets the eye and that needs to be taken into consideration. Combine drilling was very fasionable until the 90’s when it suddenly seemed to almost disappear. Why? Deficiencies in P&K had reduced and...

    Who's bottled it ?

No denying the difference there. However, are you comparing like with like? Has the lighter green/shorter crop had the same ferts, but broadcast?

    Baling and wrapping charges

Somebody told me that there were some figures quoted in the Farmers Weekly recently of just over £4 for the baling and £7 for 6 layers of wrap and £6 for 4 layers Is that about right?

    Seed barley

Does seem a bit annoying if the original seed drowned or whatever and needed replacing to have to pay a royalty a second time within a year.

    Baling and wrapping charges

Thank Gawd for that! Was a bit worried about that for just wrapping. I have amended the question so as to save confusion.

    Baling and wrapping charges

    Thats just in-field wrapping 120 x 120 rounds with 6 layers, yes?

    Baling and wrapping charges

What Individual prices should it this year for: 1. Baling 120 x120 round bale silage including net and diesel and all the chopping knives in the baler? 2. Separate (non-fusion) Wrapping in-field with six layer of wrap, including the wrap and the diesel?

    Terrible though, isn’ it?

So this is Labours idea? Do we like it? Or not?

My Dad always used to say that there is nothing to fear from a Labour government and that they grow Money at Farming. I have never voted for them, but I sure as feck will not vote Tory again either! They and the NFU have turned a profession I have loved to be a part all my life of into...

    Clarkson again

No. I‘m saying that the strong impression I’m left with is that it wasn’t RT who had instructed him to fail a certain percentage instead of just those who hadn’t attained the correct standards and that this examiner took it upon himself. We all know that if they look deep enough they could...

    Clarkson again

I don’t know if or how many of the others did write or complain to RT. I certainly did. My (senior) examiner was very embarrassed by it. He certainly thinks the whole system is flawed when such things happen. When I complained to RT that my second examiner was deliberately trying to fail me, I...

    Grass weeds

Fortunately I do have some that is actually in ear too. In fact the other end of that field, which is more medium type land. Though there is still a flooded bit about 20 metres in diameter at that end too! But it just goes to show what can happen when all the rain and weight of water on heavy...

    Clarkson again

Correct. However, you get some who should be thrown off the farm immediately: I used to write a Farmer Focus column in FW. The 2nd inspector I had got out of his car introduced himself and asked that if he failed us on any non-conformance, would I be mentioning his name in FW? Like an idiot I...
