Minimum wage? I expect a lot of them were on more per hour than a muller tanker driver (before their overtime kicked in). The draw for a lot of youngsters is the big money they can draw in without needing anymore than a driving licence. Limit the hours & I expect lots wouldn’t be so keen.
Not too much wrong with the newest machines for ditching. But not exactly in many farmers budget. Joysticks on armrests, crab steer & pretty sure some of the latest JCB’s can be driven from the joystick. Only real drawback is wheels v tracks in the wet.
They have their place & will never go out of fashion. I know they’ve had a play with a jcb hydradig around here but rarely see anything other than a backhoe doing council roadwork jobs, ditching, clearing things up etc. They’ve moved on a lot since the early ones with controls like you were...
I can assure you they would be putting their prices up if they weren’t earning from it. It’s not done as a hobby. There’s a lot of dairy farms in this area, but also a lot of contractors so they need to be competitive. But doesn’t mean they’re doing it for the love of it.
As for prices not going...
I would imagine they would be able to cancel your contract. Possibly even charge you a fee if they have to cancel. Most things are hidden in the small print somewhere.
Assessed daily (ish). Number scribbled down on whiteboard. Whole herd properly recorded quarterly with pen & paper. Pens & paper supplied by companies we deal with either at Christmas or picked up at shows 🤣
I do find it amusing that back in the day before “gap years” & buggering off to uni doing some meaningless course (as an excuse for a three year pee up) became so popular that youngsters could actually afford houses. Where as now very few of them apparently can.
My other half has an app on her phone that allows her to scan the ISBN barcode on a book which then stores the title & allows her to keep track of what she has. She likes (loves) books, so between her & our two young children there’s quite a few books in our house! Seems a quick & simple system.
Depends what they bought. You don’t need to spend big bucks on fancy shiny paint. You could pick up a perfectly serviceable forager for those acres for similar money to a new trailed.
