This is a bit worrying "A person has tested positive for bird flu in the US, health officials reported this week, the country’s second human case. H5N1 was confirmed in a person who had been exposed to dairy cows thought to be infected with the virus in Texas. H5N1 is a type of highly...

    Herbert potato bulk hopper

Does anyone have an old Herbert bulk potato hopper laying around? We have one adapted to feed our anaerobic digester, which has eaten its gearbox. Spares for the gearbox or a new one are quoted at 6 weeks delivery, so we are looking for one we could buy the gearbox from. Please PM me if you know...

Real time soil measurements - too good to be true?

This looks too good to be true, measuring 6 parameters in the soil with a probe installed long term. The only technologies I suspect might be capable of this are X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and near-infrared (NIR). I don't think either of them are suitable for installation in the soil profile, and...

    Fendt roof problems

Our 18 plate 516 was leaking water into the cab. On investigation we have a cracked roof in a strange place. It has never had anything dropped on it when in our ownership, possibly previously but there are no marks on the roof from impact. It is a major job to replace (so many items fitted to...

    Radiator repairs/rebuild

The radiator on our 1994 Claas Mega 204 has given up - needed 6 bottles of radiator anti-leak to do the last two trailer loads of this year's harvest. Manners do not have anything, and our local excellent combine fettler said last time he had one re-cored in Norwich it cost over £6k. Apart from...

Composting - keeping the EA happy

Having just had an EA inspection (much more sensible approach than people in the SW report), I am trying to find out where to go on permitting for our composting. At present we are operating with a T23 exemption, which does not really allow for the quantity of composting we need to do. The...

Farm PEP website - anyone on it?

I have signed up for this website, which looks promising. However once signed on, there seems to be no coherent structure or simple way of exploring what there is. You have the option of entering your TFF user name in the personal details, so I tried that and it wanted a URL rather than a user...

    Two way radios

As our staff numbers have dropped, we no longer need our farm two way radios. They would need programming to your frequency allocation, but are available for collection for a reasonable (smallish) offer. I suspect carriage might cost more than their value. There is Kenwood TXR751 base station...

JCB 526 turbo exhaust keeps breaking - any ideas?

Fitted a new silencer box a couple of months ago and the elbow from the turbo to the silencer has broken again, filling the cab with exhaust fumes. Our neighbour changed his 526 for this issue, but there must be a decent solution somewhere. Google just brings up the same part.

Has anyone tried both the large diameter crimper roller and the smaller diameter double roller now appearing? I would be interested to hear of any experiences.

Anyone with a Cummins 6BT biogas CHP? Need some info.

I am trying to help a farmer with a biogas installation abandoned by the installer, with a Cummins 6BT chp. The installer removed the engine number plate and replaced it with their own number, so we are unable to get spares from Cummins without this number. If someone had a similar motor we...

Cow Manager tags - anyone got good or bad experiences?

At an R500 meeting yesterday, much discussion on the benefits of Cow Manager tags, everyone who had them was impressed. Perhaps this was to justify the money they had spent! I see in a post from 27 July this year that @Cowmansam uses them, do many others of you? It would be very useful to pick...
